The Maple Leafs will have their hands full in September trying to decide which defensemen to keep and which to cut as they gear up for the 2010-2011 season. Yesterday's signing of German defender Korbinian Holzer gives them another "big" option to shore up their defensive corps. The 6'3", 190 lb, Holzer has impressed Leaf management with his international play. The 22-year-old got some fantastic experience playing for Germany in the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. He was also along for the country's magical ride in the recent World Championships which took place in Germany. The Germans began the tourney by knocking off the Americans in the tournament opener in front of a world-record crowd and rode that wave all the way to a fantastic fourth-place finish. Holzer was a physical presence throughout the tournament and racked up 22 PIM in 8 games. Don't expect Holzer to be racking up too many points as he makes the transition to AHL hockey and perhaps the NHL in the future. In his last 4 seasons ...more
